The Toroweap Formation is a geological hodgepodge of rocks and minerals that transition from the yellow Coconino Sandstone to the final light gray color of the Kaibab Limestone. It lithified some 262 million years ago and is roughly 200-300 feet thick. Though it is similar in color to the above Kaibab Limestone, a distinct feature of the Toroweap formation is its tendency to slope at an angle in some places making it easier for vegetation to grow (Arizona Ruins). It contains a little bit of everything from sandstone to limestone and mudstone. This layer was developed as the seas moved periodically inland and retreated; therefore, the components like the sandstone were deposited when the seas were further from the coast and the limestone was added when the seas were particularly close. The Toroweap Formation also has noticeable deformations caused by the weight of the Kaibab Limestone layer above and the release of water from the surrounding sediment which shows that the Kaibab Limestone was being deposited on the Toroweap formation while it was still soft and water saturated (Sadler).
